CLUB HISTORY
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
The Soroptimist
International Club of Downey was the idea of Dr.
Elizabeth S. Wright, a Soroptimist from the
Soroptimist International Club of Huntington
Park the early fall of 1951. At the first
meeting the "Founding Five" outlined the
principles of the organization. The charter
party was held January 12, 1952 at the Downey
Woman's Club. There were 25 charter members
according to records from that year. Today, we
have over 30 members and are growing. We support
many local charities, including, but not limited
to, ARC Walk, Dentists without Boarders, Downey
Symphony, Foley House, Goat Lady, Heifer
International, Keep Downey Beautiful, Living
Help Center, Los Padrinos, Pathfinders, Rancho
Los Amigos, Soroptimist Village, Su Casa, 10/20
Club, True Lasting Connections and YMCA
Campership.
In addition, several scholarships are awarded
each year. The Women's Opportunity Award focuses
on women who are improving their lives by
attending school with plans to re-enter the work
force after overcoming adversity in their lives.
The Violet Richardson Award acknowledges a
student (ages 14 - 17) for their volunteer
community involvement. We also give scholarships
to high school students in the areas of art,
vocational and to an athletic organization
supporting female college athletes. In addition,
we give awards to high school students who
received special education services and showed
outstanding achievement.
We are an international non-profit organization.
One hundred percent of the proceeds raised at
our fund-raising events are donated to local
community charities.
Soroptimist International (SI) is the world's
largest classified service organization for
women whose mission is to improve the lives of
women and girls, in local communities and
throughout the world. The SI organization
sponsors a number of international projects
designed to support that mission.

Heart Walk 2007
We had a great time
walking in the Heart Walk Saturday.
Walking and talking with friends made a
speedy finish! We topped it off with a
delicious breakfast at Mimi's!
Thank you to Karina, Bernice, Sonal,
Lisette and Dorothy for walking. Also
big thanks goes out to all of you who
donated and could not walk.
Downey was #1 in our Region. We
brought in $1,115.00 and more in checks
that are not included in that amount. I
will let all of you know our new total
once I get those numbers.
